Keeping in touch with family in hospital

05.11.2021

It can be a worrying time for carers when a relative or loved one is in hospital and with Covid restrictions still in place, many wards currently have limits on visitors to keep staff and patients safe.

Although this is never an ideal situation for the carer or cared for person, there are a number of services available that can help you to stay informed with medical updates and to keep in touch.

The Relatives’ Line

The Relatives Line can be used to provide updates on their loved ones. Consent should be sought from the patient to share information with the designated next of kin, this conversation should be documented in the patient’s records. The ward should then contact the next of kin to set up a password if that has not been obtained at the point of decision to admit.

Once a password has been created the relative can be directed to the Relatives’ Line on 01484 355370, selecting option 2. The Relatives’ Line is open between 07:30 am and 7:30 pm 7 days a week.

Virtual in Hospital Visiting

Relatives, friends and loved ones can request a virtual visit with hospital inpatients. This can be done by phoning the ward or via The Relatives’ Line who will complete the booking form on behalf of the relative.

Letters to a Loved One

Relatives, friends and loved ones can be directed to www.cht.nhs.uk where they can leave a message and even upload a photograph for their loved one. Letters will be printed and delivered to the wards by the Virtual Visiting team. There is no limit on the number of letters that can be sent a day.
